Post Production Systems Engineer 3 (Los Angeles)

The Post Production Systems Engineer 3 is an integral and very experienced engineering team member who will help the system administration team, supporting all IT and engineering requests from staff and clients at Light Iron LA. This position works closely with the Manager of Engineering and Light Iron management to increase efficiency across the organization – optimizing current steady state while building new post production systems, media pipelines, operational policies, and procedures. Applicants should have a minimum 5-8 years of experience in the engineering post production finishing field.

The candidate should possess expert technical knowledge of feature and episodic workflows, techniques and tools, and must understand the challenges and goals of creative and technical teams alike. This candidate is a self-motivated individual with a desire to take direction, looking for challenges and prevention solutions in the Engineering Department.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deploy and support a range of hardware and software including: routing switches, LTO tape libraries, tape decks, video scopes, DCI projectors and cinema servers, OLED monitors, calibration tools, audio systems, video routers and patch bays, SAN, NAS, Avid Nexis and ISIS, firewalls, KVM systems, OSX, Windows, Linux, Filmlight systems, Resolve systems, Avid, Final Cut Pro, Adobe Creative Suite, AWS, Colorfront Transkoder, EXD, DVS Clipster, Aspera Faspex, and Signiant Media Shuttle
  • Support on-set/near-set dailies deployments
  • Rapid response support for all client facing services
  • Research 3rd party products and services to suggest the best tools for the business requirements
  • Stay up to date with industry standard tools and practices to maintain cutting edge infrastructure

Required Skills/Experience:

  • Expert working knowledge of Quantum StorNext storage, Brocade switches, Supermicro computers, HP Workstations, Palo Alto Firewall, Baselight systems, and Resolve Linux Systems
  • Expert working knowledge of video and audio file formats, as well as industry standard and studio delivery specifications – particularly UHD and HDR (HDR 10, 10+, and Dolby Vision) workflows
  • Bash/Shell command line interface experience; scripting is a plus
  • Ability to manage several projects at once – the organization is lean and individual responsibility is paramount
  • A bias for action and ability to deliver mission critical support in a timely manner
  • Strong communication skills, particularly in verbalizing technical processes in a non-technical manner
  • A strong desire to deliver great looking and technically accurate content to our customers

This position works standard business hours, but may require long hours and some weekend work as needed. Some out-of-state/country and overnight travel may be expected.

Evening Production Coordinator (New York)

The role of the Production Coordinator is to execute tasks dictated by the Production team and Operations to help complete each project. The Coordinator will be handed daily duties to follow through into the evening. Additionally, they will work independently on long term projects. The Production Coordinator will collaborate with the Producers, Operations, etc. to ensure client needs are met.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate conform, data I/O, color correction, and final deliverables for multiple finish, dailies and offline projects
  • Work with the Production team to take over projects, manage sessions, and oversee the product entering and leaving the facility during the evening
  • Monitor, track, troubleshoot, and communicate project progress including details to the Production and Management teams
  • Interact with client producers, directors, cinematographers, editor, and other contacts as a representative of the Light Iron Production team
  • Schedule, coordinate, and be the main contact for all out of house client screenings
  • Assist with large projects (ie. communicating with staff, purchasing, assisting tracking costs)
  • Communicate with and facilitate Light Iron Marketing needs (ie. receiving, organizing, and distributing marketing materials)
  • Act as liaison with night maintenance staff. Tasks to be communicated by GM
  • Assist with the hiring and coordination of Interns

Required Skills/Experience:

  • Basic understanding of theatrical post production practices and techniques
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven and team-based environment
  • Attention to detail, ability to learn basics of managing each evenings requests to completion, and strong communication skills
  • Self-motivated, ambitious, ability to multi-task
  • 1 year experience of entry level production environment

Evening Operations (Los Angeles)

The Evening Operations position will increase the management presence into the evening of Light Iron’s Los Angeles facility. This role manages each evening’s facility and operations needs, and must ensure sessions, projects, and clients are managed into the evening hours. The ideal candidate possesses strong receiving and handoff skills with Operations, Scheduling and Production Teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversight of evening vault, security, client services, machine room, engineering, artistic, and production activities
  • Support production teams with making changes to schedule and resource requests
  • Work with operations leadership to devise and execute strategies to improve operational efficiency and scale
  • Contribute to the development of products to support operational needs
  • Report daily projects and feedback including immediate notification for any emergency needs
  • Provide leadership and mentoring to evening staff to meet or exceed goals
  • Communicate with company management regarding overall needs and ideas for changes
  • Actively review for scheduling conflicts and propose solutions
  • Act as a contact for customers who need to engage with a senior-level person
  • Daily room check and communication of any items that need adjustment

Required Skills/Experience:

  • College degree or Certificate in Business, Finance, Post Production, or equivalent
  • Managerial and leadership experience, with ability to delegate
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal abilities; comfortable making decisions to ensure project success
  • Effective communicator (verbal and written) with internal and external customers
  • Extremely organized and maintains strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work under pressure with strict time constraints
  • Willing to adapt to the changing needs of the company

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Management of Operations or Production within a Post Production finish business
  • 5+ years’ post production industry experience and related working practices
  • Strong working relationships with internal teams
  • Understand company infrastructure and how to leverage available resources
  • Willingness to work on a collaborative team in a fast-paced, growing environment

Episodic Production Coordinator (Los Angeles)

The fundamental role of the Episodic Production Coordinator is to execute tasks dictated by the Episodic Producers to help complete each project. The Episodic Production Coordinator will be handed daily duties to follow through the day and into the evening to complete or hand off. The Episodic Production Coordinator will collaborate with the Episodic and Technical Operations staff to make sure deadlines are met and communicate effectively with the Episodic Producers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate conform, data I/O, color correction, and final deliverables for multiple projects
  • Work with the episodic team to load EDLs, import titles, and prepare episodic sessions
  • Monitor, track, troubleshoot, and communicate episodic progress including details to Episodic Producers
  • Introduction and interact with client producers, directors, cinematographers, editors, and other contacts as a representative of the LI Episodic Team

Required Skills/Experience:

  • Basic understanding of broadcast and production practices, techniques, and terminology such as ProRes/DNX codecs, tape formats, SAN, LTO, and Dailies
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven, and team-based environment
  • Attention to detail, ability to learn basics of technical finish tools, and strong communication skills
  • Self-motivated, ambitious, and ability to multi-task
  • 1 year experience of entry level post production environment

Junior Episodic Editor (Los Angeles)

The role of our Jr. Episodic Editor will be to work with our Editors, Artists, Producers, Colorists, and our Engineers to support a custom workflow tailored to the needs of our clients. This position will be scheduled in the evening hours for a broader range of available services. A qualified applicant will be ambitious, self-motivated, and able to work mostly unsupervised and an occasional supervised session.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide conforming and editorial support to the Senior Editors and Colorists.
  • Conform episodic length and short form projects from original camera negative (file based)
  • Review and ensure that all elements meet technical specifications
  • Create opticals as required
  • Work closely with our in house producers and colorists to meet deadlines and complete work orders accurately. Turn over completed product to the next level in the workflow for delivery.
  • Communicate effectively on progress and nightly completion
  • Operate different tools to complete each conform task
  • All other duties as assigned

Required Skills/Experience:

  • A complete understanding of file based work flows, color space, and codecs
  • Avid, Final Cut, Premiere, DaVinci Resolve, and After Effects knowledge. Quantel Rio and Filmlight Baselight a plus.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in a post production environment
