History

Light Iron was started in 2009 by brothers Michael and Peter Cioni, who recognized the changing landscape of post production services. Along with founder Katie Fellion, the Cioni brothers developed a business model that catered to those who utilized progressive filmmaking techniques: instead of obligating clients to rely exclusively on a brick-and-mortar facility, the founders encouraged clients to internalize services, only employing Light Iron for the "heavy iron" steps of the post production process. The founders ignored the "one stop shop" mentality, focusing on core competencies while leveraging qualified third parties to provide ancillary services.

Light Iron's first facility opened in August 2009, which was co-located with Alternative Rentals, a digital cinema rental company in Culver City, California. While in this facility, the Light Iron team completed numerous digital intermediate, dailies, OUTPOST, and finishing services for both independent and studio projects. The team grew to include full time finishing editors, colorists, assistant operators, and engineers.

In August 2010, the company broke ground on its current facility in Hollywood and began construction shortly thereafter. The floorplan was designed around the founders' business model: today the company has three digital intermediate theaters of varying sizes, two multi-purpose edit suites, OUTPOST training center, and standard client service areas. Main construction was completed in six months, and the company transitioned to this facility full-time in February, 2011.

The Light Iron team is encouraged by its achievements and looks forward to redefining post production workflow for digital cinema.
